As patients get ready for discharge following a hernia operation, it’s natural to experience certain fears and doubts. In this blog, Dr Parthasarathy aims to delve into these typical concerns, offering clarity and reassurance by answering the most frequently asked questions during this critical phase of recovery.
Some of the most commonly asked questions include what foods can I eat after hernia surgery, can I exercise after surgery, do I need bed rest after surgery, and many others. Today let’s address the last question, if bed rest is advisable after hernia surgery.
Bed Rest After Hernia Surgery: Is it necessary?
One of the most common questions our patients ask is – Do I need bed rest after a hernia operation? And if yes, for how many days? It is a myth that after any major operation, one has to be on complete bed rest and should not move out of bed. In reality, bed rest does more harm than good for patients. We strive very hard to achieve early mobilization of patients. Even on the same day of surgery, we make the patients get out of bed and get them walking.
Why do we NOT recommend bed rest post-surgery?
The advantages are multifold. When the patient starts walking, his breathing improves, the blood flow from the leg starts flowing to the heart, and thereby, the chances of any blood clot developing in the lower limbs, which is called deep vein thrombosis, are lessened. The patient’s intestine starts functioning earlier, and their appetite returns sooner. It also gives the patient a lot of psychological strength to be able to recover faster.
Advice from the Specialist
Thus, one piece of advice that I always give to my patients is, “You do not need absolute bed rest“. Of course, they should not be doing any strenuous exercise, but all patients after a hernia operation, be it laparoscopic or open, should be encouraged to get out of bed as much as possible and move around. Absolute bed rest is no longer recommended for hernia operations. We give adequate pain relief in the form of painkillers when the patients go home. Hence, that should take care of the pain factor, and they should encourage themselves to get out of bed and be on the move, thereby actually shortening their recovery time.
