Treatment Modalities for Piles
Initially, piles can be managed at home by following a fiber-rich diet, staying hydrated, taking a sitz bath, and avoiding straining during bowel movements. People can also take the following medications to manage the symptoms associated with piles.
- Painkillers: Over-the-counter drugs, such as acetaminophen, aspirin, and ibuprofen are recommended to relieve pain.
- Corticosteroids: Steroid ointments are prescribed to relieve pain, itching, and inflammation.
- Laxatives or stool-softeners: These medications are prescribed for easy bowel movements.
These medications must not be used beyond one week. In case, if the patient doesn’t experience symptoms relief or if the medicines cause certain side effects, such as dry skin or rash around the anus then they must consult a doctor.
If the above-mentioned treatment doesn’t work, or the hemorrhoid is severely prolapsed then the patient must consult a doctor. Based on the type and severity of the condition the doctor might recommend the following treatment options.
Minimally invasive procedures: In case, if hemorrhoids are painful and causing persistent bleeding then any one of the following procedures might be recommended.
- Rubber band ligation: This procedure is recommended in case of internal hemorrhoids. In this procedure, two or three rubber bands are placed at the base of the hemorrhoid to block the blood supply. Within a few days, the hemorrhoid falls off by itself.
- Sclerotherapy: In this therapy, a chemical is injected into the hemorrhoid to shrink and destroy it.
- Laser treatment: It is a safe, effective, and less invasive, out-patient procedure that uses a narrow laser beam to shrink and remove the hemorrhoid without damaging the nearby healthy tissues. It is a much preferred and the best treatment alternative as it carries various benefits.
Surgery: When all other treatment options fail then the doctor may recommend any of the following surgeries:
- Hemorrhoidectomy: It is the most effective procedure to treat severe and recurring piles. This procedure is recommended only for grade-4 internal hemorrhoids or if the rubber band ligation therapy fails to treat the condition. Urinary tract infection and temporary difficulty in emptying the bladder are some common complications associated with hemorrhoidectomy.
- Hemorrhoid stapling: It is an effective treatment option for internal hemorrhoids. This procedure is done to cut off the blood flow to the hemorrhoidal tissue by stapling. Bleeding, urinary retention and pain are some common complications associated with this procedure. Rarely, hemorrhoid stapling may cause a life-threatening blood infection known as sepsis.
Why Laser Therapy is Preferred Over Conventional Surgery?
For a conventional surgery, a long incision is made under the influence of general anesthesia, whereas laser treatment for piles is an out-patient, non-invasive procedure that utilizes a laser beam to destroy the hemorrhoidal tissue. Because of a longer incision, conventional surgeries are painful and carry a greater risk of severe bleeding, infections, and other post-surgical complications. On the other hand, laser therapy is not much painful and causes minimal blood loss during surgery. Also, laser therapy is associated with quicker recovery and fewer follow-up visits than conventional surgery.
